Our Introduction to Ceramics taster classes are perfect for those wishing to embark upon their ceramic journey and to discover the joy of working with clay as a medium. This 2.5 hour class (includes time for cleaning up at the end!) is ideal for those with little or no experience and will introduce you to the basic principles and techniques of hand-building ceramic objects. Methods such as pinching, coiling and slab building are great ways to produce simple pottery such as mugs, soap-dishes, bowls and small vases.
Classes take place on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 6.30-9pm. The class will be taught by one of the experienced ceramic artists currently working in our beautiful space at Dockyards Ceramics Studio. All finished pieces will be dried, fired and glazed by our studio technician. Total cost of 2 .5 hour evening class: £60

There is also the opportunity to try one to one sessions at the potters wheel. Classes last for 2.5 hours, dates varying according to student and teacher availability. During the class, with guidance from an experienced studio ceramicist, you will explore the qualities of clay as a material, learning various hand-building techniques including pinching, coiling and slab building. You will learn about the importance of preparing, or ‘wedging’ clay and how to work with the material carefully to avoid cracks during the firings. You will also be encouraged to experiment with simple surface decoration, such as stamping and slip painting. At the end of the session you will aim to have 2 small pieces completed, both of which will be dried, fired and glazed for you by our studio technician. You will be notified as to when the pieces are ready to collect (usually around 3 weeks). All materials and firings are included in the price.
Please bring an apron or something that you don’t mind getting a bit dirty! Long finger nails and delicate jewellery not advisable.
All children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
